In this CD the listener will find all the joy of the Lord’s Resurrection, as expressed by the chant of the Liturgy. Among the pieces assigned to the Mass of this day of days are the well-known Sequence Victimae Paschali Laudes, and the Gradual Haec Dies. This 1976 Gregorian chant recording of the monastic choir of the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Fontgombault includes the chants of the Mass and the Office of Vespers for the Feast of Easter.

The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the great summer feast of the Virgin, has a double importance to the monks of Fontgombault. Besides being the Patroness of France, Our Lady in the mystery of her Assumption is also the Patroness of the Abbey of Fontgombault. This CD  includes   the chants of the Mass and the Office of Vespers for the Feast of the Assumption, August 15.

This Christmas Gregorian chant recording of the monastic choir of Fontgombault was recorded in 1981 in the Abbey Church, a jewel of Romanesque architecture that dates from the 12th century. It includes the chants of the Midnight and  Christmas day Masses, two Responsories from the Office of Matins, and the gracious Sequence Ave María grátia plena.

When attending a liturgical Office in the beautiful abbey church of Our Lady of Fontgombault, one is easily penetrated with the prayerful atmosphere diffused by the chant of the monks. Simplicity, respect, peaceful devotion: everything leads to divine praise.

 

  It is our hope that all those who listen to this recording may feel as if they were with the monks in the atmosphere of peace and praise of the Abbey church and hence may pray with them once more.

The pieces chosen for this florilegium come from the Masses and Offices sung for the three traditional feasts in honor of Saint Benedict: March 21, July 11 and Dec. 4.

No one should be surprised to hear an antiphon in praise of Saint Joseph at the end of this recording: for the monks of Fontgombault offer this disc to him whom they loved as Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, before receiving and venerating him as their Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI.
